Thursday to the Moon 02-04-16

Hello and happy Thursday.   Last year I was able to attend a work seminar in Orlando, Florida .  I took a day before the seminar to go to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL.    The USA was in a "Cold War" with Russia and space was the next frontier. The 1950s began a "space race" between the USA and Russia.  Russia had launched "Sputnik" into space in 1957 and, not to be left behind,  the USA launched Explorer I in 1958.  That same year President Eisenhower signed a public order creating NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration).

In September, President John F. Kennedy gave a speech at Rice University concerning increasing the space program.  Part of that speech is near the entrance to the Kennedy Space Center, named for - - guess who.  That part is as follows, "For the eyes of the world now look into space, to the moon and to the planets beyond, and we have vowed that we shall not see it governed by a hostile flag of conquest, but by a banner of freedom and peace. "    We won the space race in 1969 when  Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins landed on the moon on July 20th and Neil Armstrong subsequently walked on the moon.

I hope you had a terrific Thursday.  Thank you for looking.  See you tomorrow.
