Friday's Fish Finder 11-25-16

Copyright 2016 AJ Horton
Hello and happy Friday.  Tonight I thought I would show you my Friday Fish Finder. You know, when I was younger, we had fish every Friday at school.  That's right - EVERY Friday; week after week after week.  It was always fried, too.  For the longest time, I thought that was the only way to cook fish.  But now, being the adult that I am, I have learned differently.  Rarely do I eat fried fish, mostly it's baked, steamed or on the grill.  Every now and then I even enjoy sushi.  The point is, all that fish on Friday as a child did not curb my enthusiasm for seafood.  It's quite likely that I eat fish three or four times a week.  That's still not as many times as this big, but graceful, Pelican eats fish per week.  I enjoy watching him fish whenever I get lucky enough.  The way he slams into the water, though, seems a little rough and looks like it might hurt a little.  It also looks like it would scare any fish away, but, he usually comes back up with a meal.  Fish for this guy!!

I hope you had a fabulous Friday.  Thank you for looking.  See you tomorrow.

Friday's Great Blue Heron 11-04-16

Copyright 2016 AJ Horton

Hello and happy Friday.  I hope you're in the mood for fishing today.  Well, if you're not, my little friend here, the Great Blue Heron, is surely in the mood.  Fishing for me is relaxing, entertaining and social.  I don't have to be good at fishing.  For the Great Blue Heron, fishing is vital to survival.  That is pretty stressful for them I imagine.  I like to eat fish but I'm glad my life doesn't depend on me being able to catch a fish.

I hope you had a good Friday.  Thank you for looking.  See you tomorrow.

Fishing on Cinco de Mayo Thursday 05-05-16

Copyright 2016 AJ Horton
Hello and happy Thursday.  Happy Cinco de Mayo.  So, I went fishing - with my camera - and look what I caught!  I had to do a few things, like spotlight the fish and turn it into a pencil sketch to better bring out the fish.  This is the way I fish - - with my camera!  I don't need a license for it, either, just a camera and lens.  (Although, a fishing license is less expensive.)  :(

I hope you've had a terrific Thursday and Cinco de Mayo.  Thank you for looking.  See you tomorrow.

Thursday's Catch 02-18-16

Copyright 2016 AJ Horton
Hello and happy Thursday.  Today I was fortunate enough to watch and photograph as a Brown Pelican was fishing.  The Brown Pelican plunge dives into the water to stun small fish, and then scoops them up along with a lot of water in his pouch.  He then drains the water and a yummy meal is enjoyed.  I'm not the only one paying attention to the fishing pelican though.  Seagulls, just like the one here, try to steal those fish from his pouch as it's draining.  I've read that a gull will even be so bold as to sit on the Pelican's head to steal fish.  Now that's just rude!!  Lucky for us that the Brown Pelican is still around to enjoy.  Back in the 1960s and 1970s they were close to extinction.
So much of the pesticide DDT was in the water that these Pelicans were unable to incubate their eggs normally.  Thanks to environmentalists and subsequent pesticide regulations the Brown Pelicans have made a wonderful recovery over the last few decades.  If you want to find out more about the Brown Pelican, check out https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Brown_Pelican/lifehistory.

I hope no one tried to steal your food today and that you had a terrific Thursday.  Thanks for looking,  See you tomorrow.

Bench Life on Thursday 10-22-15

Copyright 2105 AJ Horton

Hello and happy Thursday.  After all that hiking to Pearson's Falls this week, why don't we just go a little southeast and sit on a bench?  We can drop a line and stay a while - maybe catch some fish, get away from electronics like cell phones and enjoy the peace and quiet.  It won't be totally quiet though, the birds will be singing - maybe the squirrels will be playing and talking to each other.  We can just sit, enjoy the view and sounds of nature.  I hope you're able to join me - even if it's only in your mind.  Remember, relaxing and detoxing your brain from all of life's stressess is part of the life balance that we all need.

I hope you had a great Thursday.  Thanks for looking and relaxing.  See you tomorrow.

Sunday's Reflections

Copyright AJ Horton

Hello Sunday!  What a great day to reflect.  What a great day to go fishing.  What a great day to do both of them at the Little River in North Carolina.  This is a wonderful place for fishing, kayaking, visiting, reflecting, looking at reflections..... etc.  This is where you come to get away from all the noise of the way life is today - the cell phones, the demands on your time, all the work you need to do around the house.  This is the calm you need, I need, we all need once in a while.  Well, I admit, I need this kind of calm more  often than "once in a while".

I hope you had a great Sunday.  I thank you for taking the time to look at my reflecting calm.  See you tomorrow.

Monday's Excursion

Copyright AJ Horton
Ok, so yeah, I know it's Monday.  And yes, I had to work a long, hard day.  Probably you did as well.  But, through it all, wouldn't you rather be here?  Would you rather be fishing?  Or at least have your pole set up so if a fish does bite, you can reel it in?  Or, just pretend to fish?  Either way, here you can get away from work, cell phones, computers and all the noise that comes along with those things.  Why not enjoy the time here?  The time that you have to yourself?  You know you want to.  You can go there today - right now.  I love imagining this time to myself without work or electronics and just relaxing in the sun, shade and water all day long.   So, I gave my all to work today, but now, I'm imagining how I would have liked to have spent my Monday.  And I relax.  The stress of today is leaving me.  I am at peace.

How about you?  How was your Monday?  Are you ready to put it all behind you and relax?  Want to go fishing?  Find relaxation and peace?  Please enjoy the visual.  Take as long as you'd like.  Thanks for looking.  See you tomorrow.

Friday's Catch of the Day!

Copyright AJ Horton

Most times it helps to be in the right place at the right time.  Some times that happens because of planning and preparation.  Sometimes it's just pure luck, or good fortune.  I guess it could be a matter of all three with this photo.  I know as I was taking pictures of this I was sitting in my kayak going "please, please, please be on the right camera settings," and "please, no motor boats come by and rock me"!   And so it was!  I was pleased.  Someone had sushi for dinner.   I just love Great Blue Herons.  They are very graceful birds.  When they fish, they stand very still for long periods of time, then gently wade toward their prey, then wham - they go for it!  They are so fast at that one moment, it's amazing!  I have watched them fish many times and only caught their catch on camera once or twice.  I also have only seen them eat where they catch - never have I seen them transport the catch.  So this was another wonderful surprise when I saw her pick up this fish from her nest.  I didn't think they ate in bed.  But, she has little ones now, so there must be an occasional exception.

I hope you have a wonderful Friday, whether you have fried fish, baked, broiled or grilled fish; whether you have sushi, sashimi or no fish at all.  Just have a great Friday and know that there's a wonderful weekend ahead.

Thanks for looking.  See you tomorrow.

Wednesday's Call

Copyright 2015 AJ Horton
"Hey everybody, it's Wednesday!  Come fishing with me, the water's fine."  Wouldn't that be a great thing to do today?  Forget everything you have to do today and just go fishing?  I think I would take my camera and go out looking for photo ops.  What would you do?  Would you want to stay in bed?  Would you want to go shopping?  Watch TV all day?  Hang out with friends?  Or would you rather work?  Just keep your same routine?  That's all right.  Today, in my world, anything goes and we can do or be anything we want.  So go out today and give it your best.  Enjoy your Wednesday.  It's the only one you're going to get this week.  Thanks for looking.  See you tomorrow.

Tuesday's Two

Copyright AJ Horton
I know there are more than 2 herons in the tree but I want to view only the two most prominent.  Especially the one that seems to say, "Hey, if you go out fishing, will you bring me back some?"  The other one appears to ignore him.  It was nice that they posed for a while because it's pretty hard to get a steady picture when you're photographing from a kayak.  I do love my camera and take great care to keep it dry during kayaking.

I hope you all had a great Tuesday and that you are now enjoying the scene.  Thanks for looking.  See you tomorrow.
